  12.      The WD1003S-RAH controller is designed to interface with up to two 
  13.      Winchester ST506/ST412 RLL type hard disk drives in an IBM PC AT or 
  14.      compatible system and will support drives with up to 16 read/write 
  15.      heads and 2048 cylinders.  Each drive may be a different 
  16.      configuration.  The WD1003S-RAH is constructed using surface mount 
  17.      technology.  With the 2, 7 RLL encoding feature of the WD1003-RAH, up 
  18.      to 50% more data can be compacted onto a certified RLL hard disk 
  19.      drive using a 26 sectors per track format.

  23.             DO NOT USE THE WD1003S-RAH WITH MFM TYPE HARD DISK DRIVES

  26.      Installation of the controller requires three steps:  1) verifying 
  27.      jumper settings; 2) installing into the host computer; 3) formatting 
  28.      the hard disk drives.  To complete installation, you will need the 
  29.      following:
  30.      
  31.      Two hard disk cables (3 if using 2 hard disk drives); Winchester hard 
  32.      disk drive; screwdriver; MSDOS Version 2.0 or later; IBM Advanced 
  33.      Diagnostic diskette (or similar program for IBM compatibles); System 
  34.      Diagnostic Diskette (or equivalent); FDISK and Format utility 
  35.      (normally included with MSDOS).

  40.                  HANDLE THE CONTROLLER BY THE ENDS OF THE BOARD
  41.                 SOME OF THE CHIPS ARE STATIC SENSITIVE AND DAMAGE
  42.                   MAY OCCUR IF THE BOARD IS INCORRECTLY HANDLED

  44.      Before you can install your WD1003S-RAH, you will need to be certain 
  45.      that the jumpers (small shorting plugs) are correctly set.  Refer to 
  46.      Table 1 for correct jumper settings.  Modification of factory jumper 
  47.      settings is rarely necessary.  Modify jumpers only under the 
  48.      direction of a qualified individual; i.e. your dealer.

  110.                               sectors per track into 17 sectors. The extra
  111.                               sectors are "translated" into logical heads.
  112.                               To use the translation mode, select through
  113.                               the Setup program a 615 cylinder and six 
  114.                               head drive type. (This is drive type 3 for
  115.                               IBM Personal Computer AT users. Not all AT-
  116.                               compatible systems use the same drive tables 
  117.                               as IBM.) This configuration must be used 
  118.                               when running an operating system or applica-
  119.                               tion program which requires a 17 sector per
  120.                               track disk drive.

  133.      W5         2-3           Standard factory setting. WG and drive 
  134.                               select lines only enabled when drive is
  135.                               accessed. This configuration also provides
  136.                               power up and down protection.

  140.                               supply drops below approximately +4.15V.

  200.                               Hardware Installation

  204.                             AND POWER IS DISCONNECTED

  206.      1.  Verify that your host computer has a 135 watt power supply.  If 
  207.      the disk drive(s) is(are) being installed internally, it is best to 
  208.      locate the controller in the nearest available expansion slot to the 
  209.      drive.
  210.      
  211.      2.  Remove the blank expansion slot bracket.  Put the bracket away 
  212.      and save it for possible future use.  The screw will be used to hold 
  213.      the new controller in place.
  214.      
  215.      3.  The terminating resistor must be present only on the last hard 
  216.      disk drive connected.  If there are two drives, the terminating 
  217.      resistor must be present on the second drive.  Verify proper setting 
  218.      of drive select switches for drive select 1 or 2. Refer to your 
  219.      system owner's manual for information about proper drive termination 
  220.      and select switches.

  222.      4.  Attach 34-pin control connector pin 1 to J1 on the controller 
  223.      board if W7 is set for daisy-chained operation.  Make sure that Pin 1 
  224.      of the cable connector goes to Pin 1 on the controller board.  Pin 1 
  225.      of the cable connector is typically located on the color coded side 
  226.      of the cable.

  228.                                       NOTE
  229.      
  230.      Normally, daisy-chaining implies that two drives connect to the same 
  231.      connector.  That is still true with the WD1003S-RAH.  However, it is 
  232.      possible to connect the second drive to J5.  Regardless of the 
  233.      connection, one drive must be configured as drive 0 and the other 
  234.      drive must be configured as drive 1.
  235.      
  236.      Attach drive 1's 34-pin connector to J1 and drive 0's 34-pin 
  237.      connector to J5 if W7 is set for parallel connection.  (Refer to 
  238.      jumper table for further information.)  Set the drive select jumpers 
  239.      on both drives to drive 0 if W7 configures the controller for 
  240.      parallel connection.

  242.      5.   Connect control cable to drive.

  244.      6.   Attach 20-pin data connector to J2 (Drive C or 0).

  246.      7.   Attach 20-pin data connector to J3 (Drive D or 1).

  265.      10.  Install controller board into the expansion slot. Make sure that 
  266.      the board is seated properly by pressing down on both ends of the 
  267.      board.  Secure the board with the bracket screw.

  269.                                      CAUTION
  270.                   WHEN ROUTING CABLES, BE CAREFUL NOT TO PINCH
  271.                   THEM.  CABLES MUST NOT GET CAUGHT BETWEEN THE
  272.                  COVER AND THE BOARDS, NOR SHOULD THEY OBSTRUCT
  273.                       ANY AIR FLOW PATH FROM FANS OR VENTS.
